·How my own search for answers led me to look beyond individual symptoms, and eventually shaped the thinking behind Healthspan.

For a long time, I thought about my gut as exactly that: a gut problem. Certain foods seemed to trigger symptoms, so I naturally focused on them. I changed what I was eating and paid closer attention to what I reacted to, becoming increasingly focused on avoiding the things that seemed to make me feel worse.
But eventually I realised I was asking the wrong question. I didn't want another list of foods to avoid. I wanted to understand why I was reacting to them in the first place, and that distinction changed the direction of my research.
What I eventually discovered was SIBO, or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, alongside issues with the integrity of my gut barrier. Suddenly, I wasn't only looking at individual foods anymore. I was looking at what was happening within my gut at a cellular level.
Our gut barrier is designed to be selective about what passes through it. When that barrier isn't functioning as it should, substances from within the gut can interact with the immune system in ways they ordinarily wouldn't, potentially contributing to inflammatory signalling. For me, this helped connect dots I had previously been looking at separately.
The digestive symptoms were one part of the picture, but I had also been experiencing symptoms beyond digestion. Rather than assuming I simply had an ever-growing list of foods my body couldn't tolerate, I became interested in whether improving what was happening in my gut could change how my body responded. The goal wasn't to spend the rest of my life avoiding more and more foods. It was to understand what was driving the reactions underneath them.
As a biochemist, this sent me deeper into research on the relationship between gut health, the immune system and inflammation. I became particularly interested in inflammation, not simply the obvious, short-term kind we associate with an injury or infection, but what can happen when inflammatory activity persists and begins influencing systems throughout the body.
Of course, inflammation isn't an explanation for every symptom, and gut symptoms can have many different causes. But my own experience made me stop looking at every symptom as an entirely separate problem and start asking a broader question: rather than continually chasing individual symptoms, what could I do to better support the biological systems underneath them?
That question eventually led me beyond gut health and became the starting point for the thinking behind the Healthspan formula.
Why I didn't just create another curcumin supplement
Once I began looking more closely at inflammation, the next question was what could meaningfully support it. One plant bioactive I came across again and again was curcumin, a key active compound in turmeric and one of the most extensively researched plant bioactives for inflammation.
It was an obvious place for me to start, but the deeper I went into the research, the less interested I became in finding a single "hero" ingredient.
Boswellia was particularly interesting because it has also been studied for inflammation, joint discomfort, and mobility, but it doesn't act in exactly the same way as curcumin. What caught my attention was research looking at curcumin and boswellia together. Because they influence inflammation in different ways, there was interesting potential for the two to work synergistically rather than relying on a single pathway.
That research made me much more interested in bringing complementary plant bioactives together in one formulation to work synergistically, rather than choosing one ingredient and increasing the dose.
Absorption was another important part of the equation. Curcumin naturally has poor bioavailability, which means simply putting a large amount into a capsule doesn't necessarily solve the problem. This is why we included black pepper extract containing piperine, which has been studied for its ability to significantly increase curcumin bioavailability.
The more research I did, the more this multi-pathway approach made sense to me. I wasn't trying to find one ingredient and ask it to do everything. I wanted to understand which plant bioactives could complement one another and how to bring them together in a formulation that reflected the complexity of the biological systems I was trying to support.
That thinking ultimately shaped the entire formula. Healthspan combines curcumin, boswellia, black pepper extract, grape seed extract, resveratrol, and ashwagandha, with six plant bioactives selected to work across complementary areas, including inflammatory balance, recovery, antioxidant defence, and stress resilience.
It wasn't about including six ingredients for the sake of having six ingredients. I wanted the formulation to reflect how interconnected our biology actually is, and how Healthspan was built around that idea.
My gut was where it started. Healthspan became the bigger picture.
That experience changed how I think about supplementation. I don't think we need a different bottle every time something in our body feels slightly off, and I don't believe any supplement can replace the fundamentals of eating well, moving regularly, sleeping properly and looking after our health.
What I do think has value is focusing on what we can support consistently, particularly as we get older, rather than waiting for individual problems to appear and then trying to address each one in isolation. That philosophy became a big part of how I approached the formulation and ultimately why we called it Healthspan.
I'm less interested in simply adding years to life than I am in maintaining the things that make those years worth living. Being able to move comfortably, recover well, stay active and continue feeling capable in our bodies as we get older is, to me, a much more meaningful way to think about healthy ageing.
It's the difference between simply thinking about lifespan and thinking about healthspan.
My gut health might have been what started me looking more closely at inflammation, but what I learned became something much broader. It changed the way I thought about inflammation, supplementation and what I wanted from Healthspan, and eventually it became the formula I wanted to take myself.

The research behind the story became Healthspan.
Healthspan brings together six evidence-led plant bioactives in two capsules a day, including curcumin and boswellia for inflammatory support, with black pepper extract to support curcumin absorption. It reflects the research and thinking that shaped the formula.
It was created for people who want to take a more considered approach to supporting inflammation, recovery and how they feel as they get older, without building a cupboard full of individual supplements. If you've been thinking about trying Healthspan, this is the research, experience and philosophy behind the formula.
6 plant bioactives. 2 capsules daily. One evidence-led formula.
