For a long time, the conversation around exercise for women was largely about becoming slimmer. Burn more calories, lose weight, tone up, take up less space. Strength training existed, of course, but it often sat on the sidelines while cardio and weight loss dominated the conversation.

There seems to be a shift happening.

More women are lifting weights, talking about muscle and thinking about strength not simply as something that changes how the body looks, but as something worth protecting as we get older. And from a healthy ageing perspective, this may be one of the more useful shifts we've seen in women's health.

Because muscle is so much more than just strength.

Skeletal muscle plays an important role in glucose regulation, metabolism, physical function and our ability to remain independent as we age. From our 30s onwards, we gradually begin losing muscle mass unless we're actively giving the body a reason to maintain it, and that decline can accelerate with age and around the menopausal transition.

So perhaps the question isn't simply ‘how much should we exercise as we get older?’.

It's ‘what are we doing now to protect the strength we'll want in 10, 20 or 30 years?’

Why does muscle matter as we age?

Muscle is sometimes described as a metabolic organ because its role extends well beyond movement. Skeletal muscle is one of the body's major sites for glucose disposal, meaning healthy muscle tissue contributes to the way we manage blood glucose and respond to insulin.

Muscle also provides a physical reserve of strength and functional capacity. It helps us climb stairs, carry shopping, get up from the floor, travel, garden, play with children or grandchildren and continue doing the things that make an independent life possible.

This becomes increasingly important with age because muscle mass and strength naturally decline over time. This age-related loss of muscle is known as sarcopenia, and when it becomes significant it can contribute to frailty, falls, reduced mobility and loss of independence.

The interesting part is that this process doesn't suddenly begin when we're elderly. Changes in muscle can start decades earlier, which makes maintaining muscle in our 40s and 50s particularly relevant to long-term health.

Why is strength training important for women over 40?

For women, midlife can create a particularly important window for thinking about muscle.

The menopausal transition involves significant changes in reproductive hormones, particularly oestrogen. These changes can coincide with alterations in body composition, bone density, fat distribution and the maintenance of lean muscle mass.

At the same time, our response to the same exercise and nutrition habits we relied on in our 20s and 30s may begin to change.

This doesn't mean that reaching 40 suddenly causes muscle loss, nor does it mean menopause is solely responsible. Age, activity levels, nutrition, sleep, hormones and overall health all contribute.

What it does mean is that actively preserving strength becomes increasingly valuable rather than something we can assume will look after itself.

Resistance training provides the muscles with a reason to adapt. When muscles are challenged with progressively increasing resistance, the body responds by repairing and strengthening the tissue so it is better equipped to meet that demand in the future.

That adaptation is exactly what we want to preserve as we age.

Is muscle linked to longevity?

Increasingly, researchers are interested not only in how long people live, but how well they function during those additional years.

This is the difference between lifespan and healthspan.

Living to 90 is one outcome. Reaching 90 with the strength, balance and mobility to remain independent is another.

Studies have repeatedly linked lower muscle strength and reduced physical performance with poorer health outcomes in older adults. Grip strength, walking speed and the ability to rise from a chair are even used in research and clinical settings as indicators of physical function and frailty.

That doesn't mean having bigger muscles automatically makes you live longer. Longevity is influenced by an enormous number of factors.

It does tell us that maintaining physical capacity is an important part of ageing well.

And perhaps this is where the conversation around strength becomes more meaningful.

We aren't necessarily training for what our body can do today.

What does muscle have to do with metabolic health?

Skeletal muscle is one of the largest glucose-consuming tissues in the body. After we eat carbohydrates, insulin helps move glucose from the bloodstream into cells, and muscle provides a significant storage site for that glucose.

Maintaining healthy muscle mass therefore supports glucose regulation and insulin sensitivity, two factors that become increasingly important with age.

This is particularly relevant during and after menopause, when changes in body composition and fat distribution can coincide with changes in metabolic health.

Again, this doesn't make strength training a magic solution.

But it does mean that when we talk about protecting metabolic health as we age, muscle deserves to be part of the conversation alongside nutrition, sleep, stress and overall activity.

What about bone health?

Muscle and bone aren't separate systems.

When muscles contract against resistance, they place mechanical load on bones. That stimulus helps support the processes involved in maintaining bone strength.

This becomes particularly important for women because declining oestrogen around menopause is associated with accelerated bone loss and an increased risk of osteoporosis later in life.

Weight-bearing exercise and resistance training are therefore valuable not simply because they build strength, but because they provide the skeleton with the mechanical stimulus it needs to maintain itself.

It's another example of why exercise becomes increasingly important as we age, even if weight loss has nothing to do with the goal.

Why recovery becomes part of the conversation

There is one part of the strength conversation that doesn't get quite as much attention: adaptation happens during recovery.

Training creates a controlled physiological stress. Muscle fibres experience mechanical stress, inflammatory signalling increases temporarily and the body begins a repair process that ultimately allows the tissue to adapt.

This acute inflammatory response is normal and necessary.

Sleep, adequate nutrition, rest between training sessions and overall stress load all influence recovery. Training harder isn't always the answer, particularly if the rest of the body is already under considerable physiological stress.

This becomes even more relevant in midlife, when disrupted sleep, work, family responsibilities, hormonal changes and chronic stress may all be competing with our ability to recover.

Strength is built through training, but it's consolidated through recovery.

How much strength training do women need?

Australian physical activity guidelines recommend adults perform muscle-strengthening activities on at least two days each week, alongside regular aerobic activity.

That doesn't necessarily mean spending hours in a gym or lifting extremely heavy weights.

Resistance can come from free weights, machines, resistance bands, bodyweight exercises or other forms of progressive loading. What matters is that the muscles are being challenged sufficiently and that the challenge progresses as strength improves.

For someone who hasn't strength trained before, beginning gradually and learning good technique is far more useful than trying to replicate someone else's training program online.

Consistency matters more than intensity for a week followed by nothing for a month.

Is strength training enough for healthy ageing?

No single behaviour is.

Strength training can help maintain muscle, bone and physical function, but healthy ageing is influenced by what happens across the entire biological system.

Sleep matters.

Nutrition matters.

Cardiovascular fitness matters.

Stress resilience matters.

Metabolic health matters.
